Trevor and Tamara Day are the co-creators of The Little Kit Company — a story-led creative brand rooted in kindness, curiosity, and meaningful beginnings.

The Story Behind Avery the Fox

Some may wonder why a cisgender, traditionally married couple with cisgender children chose to write and illustrate books that include transgender and nonbinary experiences.

We understand that this is an important and sensitive space, and that lived voices—especially those within the trans community—are essential. We see this work not as a definitive perspective, but as one small contribution within a much larger conversation.

For Trevor, the story began in an unexpected place. As a physician, he was caring for a patient seeking hormonal support as part of her transition. While exploring referral options, he discovered that the Adult Gender Clinic in Alberta had a wait time of nearly two years. Feeling that this was far too long, he chose to support her through the process. Although he had limited experience with hormone therapy for transition at the time, they learned together as they navigated the journey.

Through this work, Trevor began to notice something deeper. Throughout his life, he had experienced the difficult feeling of an inner self that did not always align with how he showed up in the world. While this is not the same as gender dysphoria, it gave him a window into how painful it can be when a person’s inner identity and outer life feel out of alignment.

Moved by this understanding, Trevor began supporting more patients through their transition journeys. These experiences, along with his own reflections on identity and authenticity, inspired him to write the first version of Avery the Fox.

When Trevor later shared the story with Tamara, she had just begun learning Adobe Illustrator. Inspired by the message, she brought the characters to life visually and helped shape the narrative alongside him.

Over time, the original story grew into three versions:

• a story reflecting a transgender boy
• a story reflecting a transgender girl
• a story reflecting a nonbinary character

Tamara’s motivation comes from a different, but connected place. While she does not personally understand the experience of gender identity and body feeling mismatched, she does understand what it feels like to not quite fit — and to wish things were different. She cares deeply about choosing kindness and helping others feel seen and accepted.

This project has been a meaningful personal and creative investment for our family. While we hope to sustain and continue this work, our primary goal has always been to create something gentle, thoughtful, and supportive for children and the adults who read with them.

We also encourage families to explore a wide range of books and perspectives, including stories created by trans authors and voices with lived experience.

Together, our hope is simple: that these stories help children — and the adults who read with them — feel a little less alone, a little more understood, and a little more courageous in letting their true colours show.

The Meaning Behind The Little Kit Company

The Little Kit Company began with a simple idea — that meaningful things often start small.

A baby fox is called a “kit,” and that idea felt like a natural reflection of how this journey began. Avery the Fox was our own “little kit” — an early creation full of curiosity, potential, and heart. The name The Little Kit Company honours that origin and the spirit of those first steps.

While Avery marks our beginning, it does not define our limits. The company is intended to grow beyond a single story into new ideas, projects, and creative pursuits. Still, everything we create traces back to that original spark.

Our fox symbol is a quiet nod to that beginning. It does not represent Avery directly, but instead serves as a simple, enduring reminder of where it all started — and the many directions it can still go.

Our Hope

While our experiences are different, we are connected by a shared value: choosing kindness and helping others feel seen.

Our hope is simple — that these stories help children, and the adults who read with them:
